A Companion DVD for Writing Alone and with Others,
by Pat Schneider, $30.00
AWA Press has received funding for this project from Shannon and John Chamberlin. Shannon, who participated twice in Pat's workshops at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, said she wanted to support Pat's work and to fund a teaching tool that will bring AWA methods to a wider audience. She also gave Pat a four-week residency at The Writer's Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where Pat finished work on a new collection of poems titled Night, Moon, Day, and a chapbook of poems titled The Patience of Ordinary Things. The DVD is an interactive companion to Pat Schneider's book, Writing Alone and with Others. It features interviews with Pat and with several of her senior partners in AWA. Viewers will learn about Pat's early experiences in developing her writing methods, as well as the assumptions and practices that underlie the AWA method for teaching writing. One of the most interesting features is a series of thirteen writing exercises, in which the leader not only offers specific suggestions for a writing session, but then reads her or his own written response to the exercise. This is a wonderful resource for any writer, solo or group, who wishes to participate in a virtual workshop. For teachers and for writers interested in becoming workshop leaders, there are lively discussions about the ways that Pat's method has worked in conventional workshops, in prisons, with students from elementary to high school, and with individuals in crisis. The DVD includes interviews with Pat and other AWA workshop leaders, readings by AWA writers, and a virtual toolbox for writers and teachers of writing. The award-winning film, "Tell Me Something I Can't Forget," by Diane Garey and Lawrence Hott of Florentine Films/Hott Productions, is also on the DVD. This portrait of the Chicopee Writing Workshop led by Pat Schneider introduces the viewer to the methods, and the outcomes, of writing with Pat Schneider.
